When I’m not shooting weddings throughout New England I love doing styled shoots and collaborating with local vendors. Styled shoots are a great way to meet people in the wedding industry and it’s so much fun creating beautiful content.

About a month ago I did a styled shoot with Ruffled at Allrose Farm in Greenfield, New Hampshire. I worked with an amazing team of vendors who are all featured at the end of this post. Beautiful blush, peach, and beige florals mixed with earthy moss installations created a feminine meets whimsical forest vibe. To top it all off there was an arm chair covered in bright green moss thanks to the lovely work of Emily Herzig Floral Studio. I’m always in awe of Autumn Nomad’s cake designs so special shout out to Jaime who is extremely talented at what she does.

Thanks to everyone who created all the below beauty. This was a great way to kick off the season!

Destination weddings are becoming more and more popular among engaged couples and Maine has become a huge destination wedding location. Weddings are inherently romantic on their own – add in a dreamy, exotic locale and you have all of the ingredients for a picture-perfect celebration of your love. No matter where you are planning to throw you big event, here are 10 tips that will help you flawlessly plan a destination wedding.

 Think Outside of the Box

When people hear the words “destination wedding,” they usually think of getting married on a beach. But destination weddings don’t have to be tropical. Consider selecting an unconventional location like a European capitol, a sailboat ceremony, a historical Southern mansion, or a breathtaking natural setting like the American southwest.

Give Your Guests Time to Plan

Planning a trip of any length requires plenty of planning and budgeting for both the bride and her guests. Be sure to give your friends and family advanced notice so that they can celebrate with you without having to scramble to make travel plans – it’s not uncommon to send invitations or information about your destination wedding plans up to a year in advance.

Make it Easy On Your Guests

Scope out where hotels are located and what kinds of transportation are available so that you can answer all of your guest’s questions with ease. Be sure to also seek out a variety of lodging options so that you can accommodate guests with differing budgets.

Visit Your Location in Advance

While the internet makes it easy to communicate with vendors in other parts of the world, photos don’t always tell the whole story. Try to visit your venue in advance – and at the same time of year as your wedding, if possible – to gain a better understanding of the weather conditions and other location-specific aspects you may need to accommodate for.

Choose a Wedding Dress that Aligns with Your Destination

A heavily embellished ballgown isn’t ideal for a hot, humid beach wedding. A breezy slip dress might leave you shivering during a snowy ceremony in the mountains. Consider the temperatures and weather conditions of where you are getting married and select a gown that will make you feel as comfortable as possible.

Embrace Local Delicacies

The beauty of getting married in striking settings is the ability to utilize unconventional local resources. Utilizing native flowers or location-specific culinary specialties will not only be a treat for your guests, they’ll also help your bottom line.

Frequently Communicate with Your Vendors

Planning a wedding in the city you live in is stressful enough. Planning one in another county only makes communication more important. After selecting your vendors, be sure to keep in constant communication with them so that you can remain on the same page throughout your entire planning process. This will also minimize the amount of unexpected surprises waiting for you when you arrive for your wedding.

Research Local Marriage Laws

Different states and countries have their own unique laws and requirements when it comes to tying the knot. Some demand you and your fiancé to be present in the country for a specific number of days prior to the wedding ceremony for it to be legally binding. Be sure to research local procedures so that your vows are officially recognized by the government when you decide to say, “I Do.”

Keep Extra Expenses in Mind

Many couples believe that destination weddings are an easy way to save money on a big wedding. While in some ways this is true, destinations wedding still often require a certain amount of extra expenses. Not only does airfare and lodging add up, you’ll also find yourself spending money on making your out-of-town guests feel comfortable and welcome. Flying in vendors or having décor shipped abroad can also quickly add up.

Maintain an Open Mind

Planning a wedding in an unfamiliar location has its own unique challenges. You may frequently encounter cultural differences and language barriers along the way. If you plan on hosting a destination wedding, keep an open mind and have faith in your vendors so that you can keep your stress levels to a minimum and enjoy every second of your big day.

The first word that came to mind when I entered The Crane Estate’s lovely property was “transformative.” From the moment you first set eyes upon the grand mansion and the sweeping estate, you are transported to a completely different time and place. As you walk the storied hallways and watch sunlight stream through the garden’s greenery, it’s hard not to feel like you are miles away from Massachusetts. Instead, it feels like you are walking through a classic European fairy tale that you never want to end.

If you are looking for a magical New England wedding venue that will leave all of your guests in awe, read on to learn more about The Crane Estate.

Getting Married at The Crane Estate

The Crane Estate is one of the most breathtaking venues I have ever visited. As a photographer, I discovered so many places that would provide the perfect backdrop for wedding day photos. The mansion’s marble walls and old-fashioned elegance are ideal for photos of a bride stepping into her delicate gown for the very first time. A stylish staircase leading down to the estate’s lush lawn is simply made to showcase the friends, family, and loved ones that make up your bridal party. Antique arches and trellis-trimmed pathways will provide you with beautiful portraits you’ll cherish forever. And that is just the beginning.

This Massachusetts wedding venue is every bride’s – and photographer’s – dream come true. Don’t hesitate to contact me to learn more about how we can use The Crane Estate to your wedding day dreams a reality.

A Bit of Background

The Crane Estate is a 2,100-acre property that features a variety of natural landscapes, including salt marshes, miles of barrier beach, and sweeping coastal views. The crowning jewel of The Crane Estate is “The Great House,” a 59-room Stuart-style mansion designed in 1928 by famous Chicago architect. Although once a private residence, this historic property now serves as an unforgettable setting for weddings and other special events.

Something For Everyone

The Crane Estate offers three distinct settings for your ceremony and reception.

The Great House

This extraordinary mansion is perfect for couples who want their wedding to feel like a real life fairytale. The lush green lawn overlooks the ocean and serves as a magical ceremony space. During cocktail hour, guests are invited to socialize inside the mansion’s main areas. As the sun sets, a beautiful tented area off of the ballroom is perfect place to host your upscale reception.

The Barn

Couples who want a wedding with a bit more of a bohemian flair will appreciate The Barn, a stylish event space located at the base of Castle Hill. The Italian-style barn boasts exposed beams, elegant terra-cotta walls, wrought-iron gates, and even historic stone towers. Ceremonies are held in the vegetable garden, an area that is both rustic and romantic in design.

Steep Hill Beach

Couples who desire a laidback, breezy wedding overlooking the Atlantic Ocean will appreciate the picturesque views found at Steep Hill Beach. Located on the property’s North Lawn, you’ll enjoy a seaside ceremony as well as a classic tented reception that celebrates New England’s unique charm. This relaxed setting also allows your guests to enjoy lawn games and stroll a lined path to the sandy beach.

Many women would agree that bridal gowns are perhaps the best part about weddings. I think it’s because they provide a certain sense of escapism. Even some of the most progressive, accomplished ladies I know grew up wanting to be a fairytale princess. Bridal gowns somehow allow this dream to come to fruition. Even if you’re not a bride-to-be, it’s easy to appreciate gorgeous gowns from fabulous and fashion-forward designers. From sleek and simple to decadent and over-the-top, there are designs for absolutely everyone. With bridal fashion changing every season, it’s important to keep up with current trends – especially if you’re planning a wedding. Here are some of my favorite weddings dress designers for 2019. Plus, I’ve even included my personal pick from their newest collections.

Berta Bridal

If you’ve ever seen a bridal gown picture on Pinterest that practically takes your breath away, it’s probably from Berta Bridal. This iconic designer began in 2004 but didn’t become an international sensation until nearly 10 years later. Berta Balilti’s designs feature intricate lace, figure-hugging silhouettes, and an up-scale sense of drama. Although they come with a couture price tag, gowns from Berta Bridal are a celebration of modern excellence. Plus, they photograph beautifully.

My Picks…

These gowns include all of the elements that have made Berta Bridal a global phenomenon. Beautiful lace details pop against the nude lining, while the curve-creating shapes ensures the woman wearing it always takes center stage.

Sarah Seven

Sarah Seven is perfect for the modern traditionalist. This brand’s bridal collection features sleek, sophisticated gowns that are incredibly current and perfect for anyone who considers themselves a trendsetter. While you’ll find a range of luxe lace styles, classic ballgowns, and chic, streamlined silhouettes, each one comes with an effortless elegance. Frequently featured on the runway at New York Bridal Fashion Week, Sarah Seven is a bridal gown designer that is picking up steam and not going anywhere.

My Pick…

“Kir”

This gown is perfect for anyone who wants to look refined and elegant without getting any Megan Markle comparisons. The modest neckline and sleeves pair well with the show-stopping open back. This one will make every bride feel like a Parisian sophisticate.

Grace Loves Lace

Grace Loves Lace was one of the first brands that truly made me fall in love with Australian bridal fashion. I don’t know what’s in the water over there, but the Aussies know a thing or two about style. Grace Loves Lace offers brides wedding dresses that are timeless, iconic, and just a little rebellious. The modern boho bride who has an elevated sense of style (and wouldn’t dare decorate with burlap) will appreciate their effortless, free-spirited designs, which are manufactured from the finest fabrics the world has to offer.

My Pick…

Perla

This off-the-shoulder gown is elegant, unexpected, and undeniable. It exudes all of the gypsy-chic refinement that has made Grace Loves Lace so popular with modern brides.

Today on the blog I’m excited to feature one of my favorite Maine wedding venues, Cunningham Farm. The owners, Abbi and Tanner, are the sweetest people to work with and they make you feel right at home. Their venue offers 90 acres of land – it includes three event barns, a farmhouse, a pond, a river, rock walls, a pine tree forest farm, and a beautiful white farm fence. I interviewed Abbi and Tanner so that you can learn more about their stunning venue and what they offer.

Q1: Describe your business.

Cunningham Farm is an event site, primarily used for weddings. We really strive to balance preserving the historic look and feel of the estate while weaving in modern amenities for our clients and their guests to enjoy. We’re lucky enough to be close by to Portland and Freeport for convenience, but we are set in a gorgeous, pastoral area of New Gloucester that leaves the property feeling truly private for our celebrations.

Q2: How did you get started and what inspired you?

When we first started talking about the idea of opening an event space, we knew it had to represent how we like to celebrate with our own friends and families. We looked at properties and spaces for several years before coming across Cunningham Farm. Walking around the property, it felt untouched by time, which immediately created this laid back, relaxing atmosphere. The three barns created a special, fun environment for guests, and we really felt like it gave our clients the flexibility to create their wedding or event however THEY envision it.

 Photo: http://www.bethanydanblog.com/

Photo: http://www.bethanydanblog.com/

Q3: When should couples book your services?

Right now, we only have a few dates remaining for a year and half out, so I would say anywhere from 16-24 months out – definitely look on the earlier side if you don’t have much (or any!) flexibility with your date. If your main concern is the vibe and space, we may have a date or two left a year out for those couples!

Q4: What makes your business different and what type of clients do you work with?

It’s no secret that wedding barns are widely popular right now, so it was really important to us to elevate that experience. The three barns offer different settings for an indoor or rain plan ceremony, cocktail hour, and/or reception, and the manicured acres, mature trees, old rock walls, large pond, and tree farm offer a variety of backdrops for tented or outdoor entertaining! About half our clients come to us looking for a barn wedding or event, while the other half are looking for a historic estate or unique property for their celebration. The similar thread between all our couples is that they want to bring together a team of pros that will specialize the day or weekend to them!

Aside from your marriage and your memories, your photos are often the only thing you have left when your wedding day is over. That’s why having great photos is of the utmost importance. When deciding on a photographer for your wedding, you should do more than just scroll through their Instagram feed.

Take these following factors into consideration to ensure that your photos live up to your expectations.

1. Consider Their Aesthetic

Every wedding photographer has an aesthetic that is different. This goes far beyond their photos appearing “light and airy” or “dark and moody.” Some wedding photographers have a fine art approach and carefully consider the composition of each frame. Others take a more photojournalistic and snap lots of candid photos. There is no right or wrong answer here – it’s all about what you prefer. When choosing a wedding photographer, take a look at their portfolio to get a better idea of their overall aesthetic.

2.  Personality is Important

Your wedding photographer will be present during some of the most important moments of your life. For this reason, you’ll want someone who you work well with. Before choosing a photographer, ensure your communication styles align. If you like your emails answered ASAP, a photographer who takes a lax approach to running their business is only going to stress you out. Some brides want their photographers to be a big part of their big day, while others would prefer a hands-off approach. Take all of these things into consideration before signing a contract.

 3. You Get What You Pay For

If you want images that look like the ones you’re seeing on Pinterest in Instagram, you’ll want to hire a true professional. Wedding photography costs typically range anywhere from $3,000- $10,000. Think about it – Your photographer will spend anywhere between 6-10 hours shooting your wedding. Then, there’s 30-40 hours editing your final portfolio. This doesn’t even begin to include all the cost of expensive equipment, online gallery costs, editing software costs, subscriptions, website costs, and more. Your photos are important, so this is one vendor you don’t want to skimp on.

4. Consider Their Reviews

Reviews from other couples are a great thing to consider when choosing any wedding vendor. In the real world, online reviews are often notoriously negative. But in the wedding world, most couples do a great job of sharing exactly what is awesome about their vendors. Take a look at a photographer’s online reviews to get a feel for what other couples appreciated about them. If even their positive reviews don’t “wow” you, don’t be afraid to look elsewhere.

A Little About My Work and My Approach

Now that you know exactly what to look for, I’ll share a bit about myself so you can determine whether we’ll work well together.

I consider myself a fine art wedding photographer. This means that I consider each photograph a true work of art. Instead of just posing a couple and clicking away, I am carefully aware of light, composition, texture, and colors so that your wedding is captured in the most beautiful way possible. While I make sure to capture formal portraits, details, and all the in-between events, my work doesn’t stop there. I also capture genuine, un-posed emotions by carefully anticipating each important moment, reaction, or event just before it happens.

I also consider myself a very hands-on photographer. If my client doesn’t have a wedding planner, I sit down with them and create a comprehensive wedding day timeline to ensure all the most important moments are captured. If a wedding planner is involved, I work with him or her to make sure your timeline works from a photographer standpoint as well. I also send my clients a questionnaire that reviews the important details of the day and outlines family portraits. This ensures that on your wedding day, you can just relax, enjoy the outpouring of love, and let me do all the work.

There’s never a bad time of year to stand in front of friends and family and pledge your love to your significant other. Every season has its own unique charms (and challenges) that brides have to face head-on during the planning process. As a Maine wedding photographer, I’ve seen weddings take place all year-round and know exactly what to expect. No matter if you are still setting your date or already have it circled on your calendar, here are things you should consider when it comes to making your Maine wedding picture-perfect.

Spring

There’s nothing sweeter than a springtime wedding. It’s a quiet time of year here in Maine. Cool temperatures, billowing clouds, and moody skies make this one of the most picturesque times to get married. With that said, Maine has notoriously temperamental weather this time of year. If you’re thinking of getting married in the Spring, make sure you are ready to embrace the unpredictability of Mother Nature and are plenty prepared.

Tips for Spring Weddings in Maine

Beautiful Rain gear

No matter what the weatherman says, be sure to have some chic rain gear on-hand if you are planning on a springtime ceremony. A cute raincoat or Hunter boots can add a pop of color if you happen to take your photos on an overcast day. At the very least, have an elegant umbrella on-hand if the weather refuses to cooperate.

A Stylish Up-do

For lots of women, rain means one thing – frizzy hair. If you don’t want to have larger-than-life hair on your wedding day, consider a sleek up-do rather than wearing your hair long. A French twist or chignon is always in style and won’t fall apart if there happens to be inclement weather.

A Backup Plan

This might seem obvious, but if rain is a possibility, a back-up plan is a necessity. Usually your ceremony and reception will already have an indoor alternative. But don’t forget to have indoor locations picked out for your bridal portraits as well. That way, your wedding will still look perfect, even if the weather definitely isn’t.

Summer

Summer in Maine is considered wedding season for a reason. Beautiful weather and picturesque scenery in peak form combine to create an atmosphere that is nothing short of magical.

Tips for Summer Weddings in Maine

Plan Your Exit Accordingly

One of the best parts about summer is that the sun practically refuses to set. That also means that events like sparkler send-offs or sunset photos have to be timed accordingly. Be sure to check when the sun is scheduled to set before creating a wedding day itinerary.

Beware of Bugs

Warm weather means bugs are an inevitability. Luckily, if you plan ahead, you’ll be totally fine. For outdoor spaces, incorporate citronella candles into your décor to keep the mosquitos away. Also, consider skipping a wedding dress with a tulle skirt. If bugs abound, it can quickly turn into a mosquito net.

Don’t Forget to Cover Up

While summer usually means beautiful, balmy evenings, an occasional cold snap can always occur. Be sure to have a cute cardigan or shawl on hand in case its colder than expected. Also, always have a covered or tented area for your guests so that they can take shelter should the weather take an unexpected turn.

Fall

Cooler temperatures and amazing atmospheres make fall a favorite for brides-to-be.

Tips for Fall Weddings in Maine

Keep Your Eye On Costs

The secret is out – Fall is an excellent time to get married. That means that weddings during this peak time of year cost a premium. If you are planning on tying the knot during this time of year, be sure to consider your budget.

Cooler Temperatures

Brides are usually totally fine with cooler autumn temperatures. Just remember, the later you choose to get married, the colder it will be. No one wants to attend an outdoor ceremony or a tented reception when there is frost on the ground, so be sure to have a back-up plan in place.

To me, there’s nothing more beautiful than a lakeside wedding during fall. The crisp air and colorful foliage make the surrounding scenery simply stunning.

Winter

Is there anything cozier than a winter wedding? I’m a firm believer that New England has some of the most beautiful winters in the entire world. That might be one of the reasons that winter weddings are getting more and more popular with each passing year.

Tips for Winter Weddings in Maine

Adorable Outerwear

One of the best parts about winter weddings are the adorable accessories. A vintage fur stole for you and your bridesmaids is perfectly appropriate and will give your photos a luxe, old-fashioned elegance. Jackets, hats, scarves, boots, and other outerwear can also look incredibly chic when paired with your wedding dress.

Play in the Snow

Don’t be afraid to embrace one of winter’s most wonderful features – freshly fallen snow. The stark contrast between the surroundings and the happy couple make for bridal portraits that are undeniably beautiful.

Embrace Your Bottom Line

Winter is one of the most affordable times of year to get married. Some venues even offer discounts for weddings held during their slow season. This makes it the perfect time of year for couples who want to stick to a strict budget or want money to spare during the wedding planning process.

READ SOME OF MY CLIENT REVIEWS

“5 stars doesn’t begin to do justice for our experience with Natalya as our photographer! First of all, Natalya was incredible to work with; she is personable, fun, understanding and works so hard to make your day the best of your life. She was attentive to detail, knew how to navigate a slew of dozens of family members to efficiently capture all your desired family photos, all the while she remained calm and reassuring. Secondly, she demonstrates a perfect blend of professionalism and interpersonal skills to understand how to capture the moments of your day that best suit you as a couple. Our photos are truly magnificent; they are artful, emotional, and have a way of bringing you back to the moment in which they were taken. Every single person who has seen them is blown away and moved to tears, laughter and every emotion in between. She has a gift for capturing the spirit of a wedding, pure love, and the emotional experiences of every guest along the way. You will NOT be disappointed by choosing her!!”

– Gabe + Tom

“I first came across Natalya’s work after seeing the pictures she took at a friend’s wedding. I was so impressed with their pictures that I knew I needed to have her at my wedding too! In regard to our day wedding photos, Natalya absolutely nailed it. She not only captured the style and elegance I was hoping for but was fun and easy to work with. I highly recommend working with Natalya, you will not be disappointed!”

– Mary + Chris

“Natalya was an incredibly professional and personable photographer. I was recommended her by my wedding planner and after just one phone call, I knew that our wedding day in Camden, ME was in perfect hands. We were trying to have a more relaxed wedding day so only had some vague ideas of what we wanted Natalya to capture, but she was able to come up with incredibly creative ideas on the fly and helped keep all us Type-B’s on time! She knew exactly what to say to make us feel relaxed and laugh and it was so fun to just be walking around and have her say “guys, stop- this would make a great shot!” and it totally was. I feel bad because I don’t remember really seeing her during the reception but after receiving the photos, she was definitely around and captured all of the best moments! Her style is awesome, not overly polished or posed. Her attitude is amazing, not bossy or trying to be overly creative. Natalya was amazing to work with and we literally couldn’t be more happy with our wedding photos.”

Sara and Matt had an intimate wedding in Camden, Maine. They met on our first day of graduate school back in 2011 at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University. They were both students in the same research group, working for the same advisor, and shared the same office. Fate? Their friendship grew very strong, which blossomed into a relationship during their second year.

In graduate school, Sara changed her desktop background to a beautiful photo that she found when she googled “fall foliage New England harbor” but didn’t recognize the location from her limited travels. Matt noticed that the photo was actually from the town he grew up visiting his grandparents in — Camden, ME. He said the photo was taken from the top of Mt. Battie and would love to take her up there one day.

Camden holds many special memories for these two and it was a joy to document their love in such a special place.

This winter I had the opportunity to slow down and do what I love most, shoot film. I went to Halide film workshop in Acton, MA and it was hands down my favorite workshop of all time.

Thanks to all the beautiful souls that helped create such an amazing experience and for being so open about your process and work. There’s nothing I love more than collaboration and community in this wedding industry.

I consider myself a hybrid photographer (digital + film), but I primarily shoot digital. On wedding days I use 2 professional full-frame Canon cameras and my 35mm Canon EOS 1V.

I absolutely love film and will be integrating it more and more into my wedding work. My film camera is simply a tool I use for creating my some of my work. As a photographer, and artist, I capture weddings the best way I see fit, whether that’s on digital, film, or both.

I grew up shooting film since my father had a darkroom in our basement. It’s a timeless medium that I use to tell your story. It provides dreamy and soft photographs, but it also handles light in such a beautiful way. It excels in intimate moments, movement, and details. Digital excels in low light situations, when there needs to be artificial lighting, and when time is of the essence.

I look forward to sharing many more film images in my portfolios this summer. Long live film!
